As Stanford Cardinal Women’s Basketball head coach Tara VanDerveer heads into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame today, I wanted to look back at a few photographs I had taken during my years as team photographer for the athletic department at Stanford. Congratulations to Tara!!!

Everyone knows me as a sports photographer, photographing the San Francisco Giants to covering the Olympics. But, it’s always nice to mix in non-sporting events to keep my creativity flowing.

My middle school P.E. teacher’s wife, Cindy Ginanni, owns a family dance company in Palo Alto, named Dance Connection. For the last 7 years,  I would photograph 3-4 different performances (each performance would have 3-5 different show times in a weekend) throughout the school year, ranging from the annual Nutcracker to the end-of-the-year performance.

When Cindy and her husband Mark Ginanni asked me to photograph two of their children’s weddings (Christie in October 2010 and Joe Ginanni is today!), I knew it was going to be fun because how can a reception not be fun when a dance company owner is involved! And not to jump ahead but, here’s a teaser from the dancing to show proof!

We first started out the day at the bride Christie Ginanni’s house doing family photos of her side and her getting all pampered up.

I left early, leaving my second photographer with the bride and went to the wedding location to photograph the groom Joe Stepan and his family.

The wedding ceremony was beautiful and special with that the groom’s father was ordained as the officiant. So, the ceremony photos became more personal.

After the ceremony, we took the traditional family photos with the newly weds.

While I was busy clicking away, I left my second photographer to scope out the wedding location for photo ideas to photograph just the couple. He found a beautiful spot hidden in the forest of trees.

Before the wedding, my top sales pitch when wanting to hire me is that they are hiring two professional photographers than a photographer+assistant. Even though the cost is a little higher, there is a comfort to the couple that when one photographer is alone they know the job will be done properly with beautiful photos.

1)    When I left my second photographer at the bride’s house while I met the groom before the wedding, there were beautiful images created at both scenes.

2)    During the ceremony, I photographed the procession of couple’s parents, bridesmaids, and groomsmen while my second photographer stayed behind-the-scenes with the bride and her father.

3)    Shortening the photo sessions after the ceremony. Photographer #1: photographs the traditional family photos. Photographer #2: searches for photo ideas to photograph the couple, both photographers have a good eye for looking for photo ideas.

When I hire a second photographer, I look for someone who is a photojournalist or a wedding photographer.

2010 was a year I will never forget. Having to experience my first Olympics, and it was a rare one at it too! Having the combination of the weather from a Summer Olympics and the sporting events from a Winter Olympics!!!

My cousin, Daniel J.R. Ishida, was honored today with his Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Eagle Scout is the highest ranking in Boy Scouting and only a handful achieve this rank. Daniel is a member of Troop 201 from Wesley United Methodist Church in San Jose, CA. Congratulations Daniel!

I’m not a big soccer fan because I feel the game is a little too slow to watch. But, as a photographer, it’s a sport I enjoy to photograph. My company got word that only one credential was approved for the Real Madrid/Club America match, so I happily gave the credential to my partner and soccer lover Jason O. Watson. My company asked for Jason to cover Club America’s practice (day before the match) and request for a second credential in order to fulfill the requests of our clients who wanted deep coverage of both teams. Jason had no luck at practice to get a second credential, so I thought I was safe and happy to have a day off. Jason went back the morning of the match to pick up his parking pass and called me with “Kyle, I got you a second credential.” In my head, I said, “there goes my day off!” But, by the end of the night, I was really thankful to photograph the match!

This week, I photographed the Bank of the West Classic Women’s Tennis Tournament held at Stanford University. 29 matches later, I am grateful that I had a camera in front of me for the whole time or else my neck would be sore from serve-left-right-left-right-serve-left.

Unlike the SAP Open Men’s Tennis Tournament held at HP Pavilion in San Jose, this event is held outdoors which is very beautiful. The outdoors creates beautiful lighting for pictures, like my image of Maria Kirilenko.
